The mountain Hochwald

A Majestic Mountain in the Zittauer Mountains

At 749 metres, the Hochwald is the second highest mountain in the Zittau Mountains after the Lausche, right on the German-Czech border. The Hochwald has two peaks, a north and a south peak. On the southern summit there is a viewing plateau and the Hochwaldbaude (inn). On the northern summit there is a 25 metre-high observation tower (the mountain's landmark) and the Turmbaude (inn). The national border between Germany and the Czech Republic runs across the southern summit with the Bergbaude. On a clear day with good visibility, you can see the Jizera and Giant Mountains, the Jeschken, the mountains of the Lusatian Mountains, Saxon Switzerland, northern Bohemia and the eastern Ore Mountains. There are numerous different ascent options, e.g. from the village of Oybin, Hain, Petrovice and Krompach, but also from the hikers' car park at Kammloch (the road to Lückendorf). The historic ridge trail, the European long-distance hiking trail E3, the Zittau-Wernigerode long-distance hiking trail and the Upper Lusatian mountain trail lead across the Hochwald. As on Mount Töpfer, the small tourist railway (Zittauer Gebirgsexpress) also runs here from May to October. It runs every hour from Oybin and Hain to the top of the mountain for those who have not come to hike in the Zittau Mountains.
